Would you like fries with that?

August 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

My kids have a youth group picnic tonight, so we decided to whip up a little treat for them to take and share.  We got the idea from the Bakerella blog.  Being a last minute idea, ours are not quite as fancy.  We didn’t want to have to cut up a bunch of cardstock to make the baskets, so we settled for some origami boxes that we learned how to make at a friends house just the other day.

Cake Statistics

12 cake mixes

3 dozen eggs

10 lbs. powdered sugar

2 lbs. marshmallows

3 lbs. Crisco

3 lbs. brown sugar

4 lbs. candy melts

1/2 pint almond extract

6 hours of baking

10 hours of prepping and decorating

one 30 inch by 36 inch piece of plywood

about 85 lbs total weight!

One cool (I hope) cake!

No pics till tomorrow, the birthday boy has not seen it and it just doesn’t seem fair that you all should see it first.  Of course, the real challenge is in moving and transporting the silly thing.  Seeing I am pretty sure that I cannot out do myself, next year he is getting a plain sheet cake!

I have been quite busy the last few days, I had 6 pies to make for church this week plus I am getting ready for a huge cake this weekend which required making some candy clay.  I had never made candy clay before, it was really quite fun to play with, just like play-doh.  Here are some pictures of all the baking:

The Big Catch-Up Post

January 6, 2009 · 1 Comment

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Years. Ours was certainly relaxing!

We have been having all kinds of internet and phone issues since the big ice storm and finally got them taken care of this past weekend, so I really haven’t been neglecting my blog on purpose.

We had a really nice and quiet Christmas. The kids seemed to have enjoyed their “big” gifts and have been putting them to good use.

I haven’t done much exciting, but I have been plotting and planning and making resolutions.
One of my big resolutions for 2009 is to finish all those unfinished projects I have lurking in corners and under the bed. My goal is to finish at least 2 UFO’s or PIG’s (Un-Finished Object or Project In Grocery Sack -for you less crafty types) before starting a new project. I have been organizing my projects and have figured out which ones need to finished and which one’s have completely lost my interest and need to be salvaged into something else. Hopefully I will have some finished projects to show soon.

Other resolutions include:
-Eating Healthier-I have a major sweet tooth and need to learn to find some better alternatives.

-Reaching out to others more – this is a tough one for me because I struggle with thinking that others are too busy or won’t like me.

-Keeping our school day a priority without being obsessive!-

-Posting to my blog at least 2 times a week.

Other than that, things have been pretty low key around here. Joel and I finished our second cake decorating class and look at the cake he made!

Hope that the New Year finds you all happy and healthy. I look forward to sharing my adventures, projects, successes and failures for 2009!
