Exploring and Chocolate Moose

July 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Saturday we got up bright and early to go exploring.  We actually had a destination in mind as the boys (big and little) needed some waders for fishing over the July 4th weekend.  Joel had done some research and had decided that what he needed could be found at Kittery Trading post in Maine.  Now, if we could drive in a straight line it probably would only take us 20 minutes to get there, but there is no such thing as a straight road here!  We had to drive down into Massachusetts to get on the right highway to Maine.  I think one of the things we have to get used to is making sure we have change in the car to pay the tolls, there were no toll roads in Michigan!

Anyway, it was a nice drive into Maine.  Our first stop was Kittery Trading Post which is very much like some of those other big name outdoor stores.  The boys were in heaven wandering around looking at all the hunting, fishing, and camping stuff.  After much trial and error we were able to find a  pair of waders that would work on Joel’s skinny little body with his size 9 feet attached.  They are a really nice pair and should last him quite a while unless his feet keep growing!  The town of Kittery is also home to several little outlet malls and some neat “antique” and specialty stores.  We poked around town in some of the little shops.

Then, because the boys had not had quite enough outdoor store shopping (and were still in need of another fly rod) we made our way a little further into Maine to Scarbourough and home of Cabelas.  The boys found the rest of the fishing poles and accessories that they had been looking for plus a few extra items.  After the boys finally got their fill of shopping, we decided to take the back roads on our way out of Maine.

One of the stops we made was at a candy store with a 1700 pound chocolate moose!  It was all had sculpted and quite impressive!  We also sampled some Bangor Taffy which was like a caramel coated in powdered sugar-yum!  We also picked up a blueberry soda that was quite a tasty treat!  We went through some very quaint little towns on our way out of Maine and discovered some places we would love to go back and shop sometime when we have the time and money.  One thing I really liked about the towns was that there was very few “chain” stores, most of the stores were local and unique–something that seems so rare now.  I would love to have the time to poke around some of the antique stores and art galleries.

I also managed to work on a few knitting projects in the car and got quite a bit done.  I have my dad’s Christmas present almost done and already can’t wait to see his reaction. (Shhhhh, I made him a felted squirrel- which is kinda an ongoing family joke).

Sunday, we went to the farmers market (a rather disappointing trip) but there were only 5 vendors and they didn’t really have much, so we ran a few errands and then came home and relaxed.  I was able to finish up a couple of projects and get the house clean.  So much for and exciting end to my weekend!
